# DinoAI Code Review

> DinoAI reviews GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests to your dbt™ project, posts its findings as one review with a Paradime Code Review check, and answers @paradime mentions.

DinoAI Code Review reviews the pull requests on your dbt™ repository and replies when someone mentions `@paradime` in a comment. You set it up in the **Agent** app, under **Code review**. You don't need a GitHub Action, a CI file, or an API key.

For each pull request, DinoAI:

* checks out the head commit, reads the changed files and the models upstream and downstream of them, and runs `dbt compile` or queries when that settles a question;
* uses column-level lineage to judge the downstream impact;
* posts its findings as **one review**, with an inline comment on the changed line for each finding;
* puts a **Paradime Code Review** check on the head commit.

It works with GitHub pull requests and GitLab merge requests. On GitLab, the app says merge request, MR, and commit status, but the behavior is the same. See [GitHub and GitLab](#github-and-gitlab) for the differences.

## Before you start

* Your workspace has a [connected dbt™ repository](https://docs.paradime.io/products/settings/git-repositories/index.md) on GitHub or GitLab.
* **GitHub:** the Paradime GitHub App is installed on the repository. To set it up, [install the Paradime GitHub App](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/github/github-app.md#connect-the-github-app-integration). DinoAI posts reviews through the App. The repository can stay on its deploy key.
* **GitLab:** the project is covered by a [GitLab connection](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/gitlab). To set it up, follow the install steps for [gitlab.com](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/gitlab/gitlab-com.md) or [GitLab Self-Managed](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/gitlab/self-managed.md). DinoAI posts reviews as the Paradime bot. The repository can stay on its deploy key.
* Pick the agent that writes the reviews: the **DinoAI reviewer**, which Paradime manages and needs no setup (see [The DinoAI reviewer](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/custom-reviewers.md#the-dinoai-reviewer)), or a [custom reviewer](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/custom-reviewers.md) that runs one of your own agents.
* To create or change reviewers, you need the Admin, Workspace Admin, or Workspace Settings Admin role.

If **Code review** is not in the Agent app sidebar, or the page says **Code review is not on for this workspace yet**, Code Review is not on for your company. Contact Paradime support to turn it on. Repositories on Bitbucket or Azure DevOps are not supported.

## How it fits together

| Part | What it does | Page |
| - | - | - |
| **Reviewer** | A rule in **Code review**: which branches it watches, which agent writes the review, and when. | [Add a reviewer](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/add-a-reviewer.md) |
| **Review mode** | **Automatic**, **Once per PR**, or **On mention**. | [Review modes and blocking](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/review-modes.md) |
| **Paradime Code Review check** | One check on the head commit, shared by all reviewers. It can block the merge. | [Review modes and blocking](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/review-modes.md#block-merging-on-findings) |
| **`@paradime` mentions** | Ask DinoAI a question in a comment, or request a review. | [Mentions](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/mentions.md) |
| **Custom reviewer** | One of your own agents writes the review, with your instructions. | [Custom reviewers](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/code-review/custom-reviewers.md) |

## Where reviews show up

* **Code review page:** **Recent reviews** lists the last 10 review sessions, with the pull request and the reviewer name.
* **Sessions:** each review and each mention is an [agent session](https://docs.paradime.io/products/dino-ai/programmable-agents/agent-sessions.md) with the **GitHub** or **GitLab** source. The session list and the session header link to the pull request, for example `#142` or `!42`.
* **Turbo CI runs:** the details bar of a [Turbo CI](https://docs.paradime.io/products/bolt/ci-cd/turbo-ci/index) run shows **Reviewed by** and the reviewer name with the review status, for each review of the run's commit. Select it to open the review session. If no active reviewer watches the branch, the Turbo CI schedule and run pages show **No DinoAI reviewer watches `<branch>`**. Select **Add a reviewer** to open a new reviewer with that branch filled in.

DinoAI Code Review and Turbo CI are separate. Builds and tests still run in Turbo CI on Bolt.

## GitHub and GitLab

| | GitHub | GitLab |
| - | - | - |
| Connect | [Paradime GitHub App](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/github/github-app.md) | [GitLab connection](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/gitlab) (gitlab.com or Self-Managed) |
| Review | One pull request review with inline comments | Draft notes, published together as one GitLab review |
| **Paradime Code Review** | A check run: success, neutral, or failure | A commit status: success or failed. A non-blocking review with findings shows as success, with the count in the description. |
| Blocking review | Requests changes | Fails the commit status. On GitLab 19.3 and later, also marks the review as **Requested changes**. |
| Who DinoAI answers | Write, maintain, or admin access to the repository | Developer role or higher on the project |
| Account link | [GitHub user-level OAuth](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/github/github-app.md#connect-github-user-level-oauth) | [Link your GitLab account](https://docs.paradime.io/integrations/gitlab/connect-a-repository.md#link-your-gitlab-account) |

## Compared with the DinoAI GitHub Action

The [DinoAI GitHub Action](https://docs.paradime.io/guides/programmable-agents/github-action-pr-reviewer.md) also posts inline review findings, from a GitHub Actions workflow that uses an Account API key. Use DinoAI Code Review when you want Paradime to run the reviews with no workflow file, on GitHub or GitLab. Use the Action when you want to control the trigger in your own workflow, or when Code Review is not on for your company.
